Bomb Threat Actions
Bomb threats received by companies may be
communicated either in writing such as had written notes or email or
verbally either in person or over the phone. A threat to use an
explosive against you company should be taken seriously, especially if
recent negative activities have occurred such as labor disputes,
layoffs or recent personal conflicts in the workplace. Bomb threats
can be either for revenge, extortion or a part of civil unrest or
terrorist activities.
Bomb threat response should follow company procedures.
1. Prepare a bomb threat response plan. Train all
managers and supervisors in the plan so as to avoid unnecessary panic
or inappropriate behavior if a search or evacuation is necessary.
Conduct an annual drill to exercise the plan.
2. Have facility blueprints available for police and
emergency units if a response is necessary. Ask local
authorities of they have any resources available to assist you in your
physical security plan.
After receiving a bomb threat you can:
1. Ignore the bomb threat.
2. Implement evacuation plans and call police
3. Call police and start a search
Management must decide what course of action to take for every
instance. No two bomb threats are alike. Once local
authorities have been notified, provide them with a company liaison
who is trained in company procedures and facility layout. If a
search is implemented, be sure no one touches or moves suspicious
packages or materials. Evacuation should be to pre-planed areas
that are well away from the building in question. A 300 foot
perimeter should be established if possible.
Search teams should be comprised of two people per team to ensure a
complete search is conducted of all rooms. Rapid search can be
conducted by having employees search their own work areas. It is
essential that all personnel assigned to conduct searches be trained
on effective search techniques.
If a suspicious package or object is located, the description and
location should be communicated to authorities immediately. It
should not be touched or moved. If not already completed, building
evacuation should be ordered.
