Follow established company procedures including use
of the bomb threat checklist
1. If a bomb threat is received over the
phone, remain calm and keep the caller on the line by asking
questions. Be sure to act concerned. If the person making
the threat thinks you are not taking them seriously they may hang up
and execute their plan.
2. Get a manager to contact the police on
another line. Take notes to pass to this manager for relay to police.
3. Tell the "bomber" that you are concerned
for any deaths or injuries that may result. Give the bomber you
first name to establish an identity with them. This can result
in the bomber having second thoughts when dealing with a real person
vice a impersonal company.
4. Ask the bomber why they want to use a bomb.
Tell that that the facility is occupied and that it will take time to
evacuate the area. Ask, "Where is the bomb? We need to evacuate
to an area away from the bomb. When will the bomb go off? How
big is the bomb?" KEEP THEM TALKING
5. Take note of the gender and accent of the
caller. Listen for background noises such as music, television,
traffic, etc, which may help authorities identify the location or
identify of the bomber.
If a bomb threat is received in the mail or other
written means, be sure to keep all received material, including the
envelop. Do not touch the bomb threat material any more than
necessary to avoid smudging fingerprints and contaminating other
forensic information about the bomber.
